Exchange server 2016 prerequisites-installation

Exchange 2016 system terms and conditions:

Domain controllers

All domain controllers in the forest need to be running one of the following:

Windows Server 2016 Standard or Datacenter

Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Datacenter

Windows Server 2012 Standard or Datacenter

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise

Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter RTM or later

Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter

Active directory forest:

The efficacy of active directory forest demands Windows Server 2008 or more.

IPv6 support:

IPv6 is enabled only when IPv4 is also available in Exchange 2016. Exchange 2016 only works in this arrangement and its network supports the both IPv4 and IPv6. All servers having Exchange server active in them can transect data (send and receive) from any device and client having IPv6 address.

Hardware demands:


x64 architecture-based computer with Intel processor that endorse Intel 64 architecture (which was previously called Intel EM64T)

AMD processor that endorse the AMD64 platform

Intel Itanium IA64 processors failed to substantiate.


It depends upon the Exchange roles that has been downloaded. So, its variable.

Mailbox   8GB minimum

Edge Transport   4GB minimum

 Paging file size

The minimum size of page file is physical RAM plus 10MB,

 Whereas maximum size is 32,778MB (32GB) (viable when you are using 32GB of RAM.)

 Disk space

Disk space has to be at least 30 GB on the drive on which Exchange is been installed.

Extra 500 MB of disk space must be available for each Unified Messaging (UM) language pack which is yet to be installed in the future.

200 MB of disk space must be available on the system drive

A hard disk with 500MB of free space must be present to save the message queue database.

 File format

Disk partitions should be according to the format called NTFS file systems, which has the following partitions:

System partition

Partitions that saves Exchange binary files or files generated by Exchange diagnostic logging

Database files, such as mail bank and transacted databases

 Disk partitions save only the following types of files which can be formatted by a format called ReFS. The files are:

  • Partitions which possess transport (transaction) log files
  • Partitions which possess mail-bank (mailbox) database files
  • Partitions which possess content indexing files.

 Net Framework

Microsoft suggests to use the newest version of .NET Framework that’s endorsed by the working of Exchange you’re installing.

Note: Exchange 2016 Cumulative Update 3 or later is a necessity to install Exchange on Windows Server 2016.


Select Powershell as “Run As Administrator” and use the command given below:

Download-WindowsFeature ADLDS

 Install .Net 4.6.2

Install Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 Runtime 

 Download Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 core Runtime:

Open UcmaRuntimeSetup.exe then Right Click and select Run as administrator as shown below :

The accomplishment of conditions will start the Exchange 2016 downloading which can be done by GUI or Unattended mode.
