A guide to Installation of Lync Server 2013 Cumulative Updates

First Login to the server and confirm if the server is ready for an upgrade (valid only for Enterprise Edition).

Open Lync Management Shell and “Run as Administrator”.

Now Run the following command


It will show this output

Confirmed that it can be upgraded.

Here are the steps to be followed for upgrading

In the standard edition, you can directly download & install. Download the latest cumulative update.

Once you download, save it in a folder. Over here We are saving it in “Updates”

Now, open the Updates folder &open the folder with the latest date as in the image

Here you will see “LyncServerUpdateInstaller”

Before, you begin with installation process, check the services in the “Running” state as they

need to be stopped using a command Stop-CsWindowsService –Graceful.

 You can also run it withoutthe –Gracefulparameter if you are in maintenance window.

Now Head back to the folder & open “LyncServerUpdateInstaller”.

User account control pop up will appear. Click Yes.

“Microsoft Lync Server 2013 Cumulative Installer” window will open.

Click on “Install Updates”.

After you click, you will see components being installed.

After the completion of Installation, a popup to reboot the server will appear. Click Yes

Once it reboots, check if the required patches are installed & the server patches are up-to-date.

It can also be verified by running the following command.

Get-Wmiobject -query ‘select * from win32_product’ | where {$_.name -like “Microsoft Lync Server*”} | ft Name, Version -autoSize

After the confirmation, make sure to run the services that need to run by this command.



It is recommended by Microsoft as Best Practice when you plan an upgrade or maintenance for Lync servers in High Availability and in Pool Pairing to upgrade servers one by one, bring one down, upgrade it, bring it back up & move to the other.
