Few days back, At remote location, once I born-again a physical UNIX machine into virtual machine (based on ESXI five.5, machine ver 10) I received following error once tried to edit its properties to feature new interface card.
Editing virtual machine settings fails with the error: you cannot use the vSphere consumer to edit the settings of virtual machines of version ten or higher .

I had the choice to downgrade it victimization v-converter consumer, however Time was extremely short as whole network was down and recent physical machine was additionally out of order, therefore I used following hack to feature the interface quickly and create it on-line.
Turn OFF the desired Guest,
Remove the guest from the inventory (Right-click -> take away from inventory)
Browse your ESXI data store wherever guest files area unit placed,
Now transfer the .vmx file from your the situation wherever your guest files area unit placed (Example guest’s name. Vmx file)
Open it in any text editor (Example pad of paper PLUS+),
Change the subsequent …
virtualHW.version = “10” to virtualHW.version = “8”
As showed within the image below

Save this file and transfer back to original location.
Add the guest back to your inventory by right clicking the vmx file and choosing “Add to inventory”
Now try and edit the guest properties, and now you’ll be ready
to screw.
There were another workarounds too however therein specific scenario, I found this methodology the foremost fastest and in particular it worked well 🙂
